A LETTER

E-Mail   by Joseph Burgeson   Bio/Address

An envelope slides under my door with a soft swish,
the whispered announcement of a letter's arrival.
I delight in the prospect of this unexpected visitor
calling on my solitude;
in an instant the welcome lightness of its paper symmetry
is in my hands, a sudden gift that my excitement
can't wait to unwrap and discover,
It's her.

M
y thoughts quicken and hurry my fingers along
as they pull apart the stapled sides,
my hopes taking prominence in rapid succession:
(the lawyer says it looks good
she still loves me
the family will visit me soon).
As the pages unfold like the petals of a blossom,
her thoughtful essence emanates from them;
for a heady moment she's there,
close as I breathe,
a rose whose blush
puts blood back into the face of my humanity
as I forget for a while.
